Trump Predicts Removing Filibuster Will Be “Catastrophic” For GOP

( Former President Donald Trump warned last week that the Republicans must push back against any effort by the Democrats to remove the Senate filibuster, explaining the irreversible damage it could do to the party and the country.

It’s a proposal long considered radical but endorsed by the likes of former President Barack Obama as a way of helping Democrats push through their extreme agenda without seeking compromise with republicans.

The Senate filibuster is a parliamentary process that allows a senator to speak for as long as they wish during a debate unless three-fifths of Senators vote to bring the debate to an end. It’s a process that came about in 1806 and has since been refined, becoming a method of ensuring that the Senate finds 60 votes to end a debate and pass legislation.

While it initially came about as a side effect of a rule change in the Senate, the process has for decades encouraged both parties to work together and seek compromise on legislation that would have dramatic effects on the country.

President Trump warned that Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky was “hanging by a thread” on the issue of the filibuster, which he is currently opposed to.

“And if they get the filler, he’s hanging on [Democratic Senator] Joe Manchin, who always goes with the Democrats,” Trump told Lisa Boothe during an episode of her podcast. “Joe talks, but he ends up going with the Democrats.”

Senator Manchin is one of only two Democratic Senators openly opposed to eliminating the filibuster. Should he be swayed on the issue, Democrats may be able to force a vote on the rule change and allow for a series of extremely radical pieces of legislation – ranging from the Green New Deal to various bans on gun sales – to pass during the Democrats’ two years of control of the chamber.

“Now there’s another great senator from the state of Arizona. He’s hanging by a thread and if they get rid of the filibuster, if they knock it out, it will be catastrophic for the Republican Party,” President Trump continued.

The Senate is currently tied, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the deciding vote on legislation when there is no majority. Without the Senate filibuster, Democrats will be able to pass whatever they like.

Senator McConnell also warned this week that reforming the filibuster would result in a “nuclear winter.”

“I think if they destroy the essence of the Senate, the legislative filibuster, they will find a Senate that will not function,” McConnell said.

So it’s no surprise that President Joe Biden supports it.

“You had to stand up and command the floor and you had to keep talking along,” Biden claimed recently. “Once you stopped talking, you lost that and someone could move in and say, I move to the question of. You’ve got to work for the filibuster. It is almost getting to the point where democracy is having a hard time functioning.”

The writing is on the wall.
